29th-Dec-2009 01:33 pm - friends of the mammary
Dear [info]b0st0n,

I've been trying to grow our men with heart team for the Komen 3 day walk in July. Last year, we fielded a team of 20 walkers/ crew and raised over $50,000 for breast cancer research. Doing the walk last year was one of the best experiences of my life.

Its not even the first of the year yet, but we already have a team of 9 guys. I know that we can collectively raise more money and field a larger team this year.

If you are a guy and would like to take part, you can register for the walk via the Komen page. Females are welcome to nag their SO's or other guys they know to take part. All are welcome to donate :).
29th-Dec-2009 11:43 am - New Year's locales?
Can anyone recommend a good place for a single person to hang out in Boston New Year's Eve? I feel like doing something out of the ordinary and above all FUN this year.
27th-Dec-2009 11:02 pm - Bazaar Bizarre
I purchased a $5 grab bag of 3 ceramic holiday ornaments at this year's Bazaar Bizarre, and now I've forgotten who I bought them from. Does anyone know which vendor was selling these? They were in plain brown paper packaging and just say "$5" in green marker on the paper, so I have no way to identify them.
27th-Dec-2009 07:51 pm - accupuncture
hey b0st0n, any recommendations for an acupuncturist? i want some help with the quitting smoking thing, and chantix seems rather scary what with the "may cause suicidal thoughts or actions, impulsive sex or gambling, insane dreams, manic episodes" etc. i'd rather use mindfulness and might as well try needles, what the hell, i've got enough holes in me already.

mbta told me to enjoy my impending lung cancer, but being as i'm trying to be healthier i figured i'd try here. (really i just want to become one of those straight edge dicks who looks down on everyone else.
;p
27th-Dec-2009 04:57 pm - Looking for an elusive cafe
Hey,

An acquaintance told me in passing about a place called 613 Cafe in Chinatown, apparently they sell really great / cheap vegetarian subs there. I've Googled and Yelped for the place but it doesn't appear to exist. Anyone know of such a place??

Thanks.

Hello, Boston. Although it is far too soon after the holiday to be thinking about MORE food... Where is the best place in town to buy macarons? They are a French sandwich cookie made with almond paste and they look like this:

Photobucket

I've only tried the ones at Burdick's in Harvard Square, which are tasty, but a little on the smallish side and really stale. And at $1 per tiny cookie, I think they should at least be fresh!

I'd especially like to know because one of my best friends is visiting from Europe and really misses his macarons, so a nice little box would make a perfect post-holiday gift. Of course, wherever I buy them, I'm sure he will complain that they are infinitely better in France (well, duh) but I'd like to know all the same.

Thanks. :)
26th-Dec-2009 11:47 am - Sleep No More
I've seen a few posts about the show before so I thought I'd let everyone know that Sleep No More has been extended to Feb. 7th.

You can't get a group discount for the extended shows but they have great "passes" you can buy. (even better deals for college students)
26th-Dec-2009 11:41 am - Parking on Columbus
Yet another question about parking/keeping a car in the city.

I had a parking pass through Northeastern last semester but it's expiring on the 31st, and I want to explore less expensive options for keeping my car in the city. I live on Columbus Ave basically right between the Ruggles and Mass Ave T-stops, and I know there are options for free on-street parking, though I'm not really familiar with the rules for doing that. Is it worth the hassle or should I look into other alternatives? Thanks in advance.
25th-Dec-2009 04:15 pm - Camera fixin'
Ho ho ho, ye merry cityfolk.

So as part of my Christmas, I'm going to give my much-abused DSLR a cleaning and tuning (and maybe a few part replacements). My question to you, Boston, is where is your favorite place to get a Nikon D50 fixed up?
24th-Dec-2009 07:50 pm - Biking to east boston
Hello all -

The husband and I are going to be relocating to Boston in a few months and we're currently scoping out neighborhoods. Here's the question: we were very seriously thinking about east boston until we realized that it's connected to boston proper by a very un-bicycle-friendly tunnel. Taking a bicycle across the blue line during rush hour is not allowed, right? So at certain times of day, we're not going to be able to get bicycles out that neighborhood, unless there is some ped bridge or other workaround that I'm missing. Anybody know the area and have any insight?
24th-Dec-2009 05:44 pm - Tea and Tobacco
Does anyone know any good tea-shops in China town? Some place where I can score a few grams of aged Oolong or Pu-Erh? Preferably from a withered old man who barely speaks English, with a single eye.

Also, are there any decent cigar shops/tobacconist shops in the financial district area?

thx
24th-Dec-2009 05:33 pm - Open Mic
Hey b0st0n. How's it hanging?

Anybody know of any comedy clubs w/ amateur/open mic nights? I lost a bet D:

Thank you~!
24th-Dec-2009 02:05 pm - Gyms and Christmas
This is kind of a shot in the dark, but does anyone know whether any Boston area gyms are open tomorrow, even if they have limited hours? Not everyone celebrates Christmas, but we basically all have the day off and I've love to get in a workout. :)
Okay, I know everyone hates travel questions, but I'm in a pinch and MBTA isn't really helping me. I'm trying to get from Hinghham (south shore) to Lowell (north shore). I can take the commuter rail from West Hingham into south station, take the t (red line to orange?) to north station, and take the commuter rail from there to Lowell. My question is, is there any other way to do it? Any alternative routes that I'm missing? Also, once in Lowell, I have to rely on a bus to get me to the exact street I'm going to (http://www.lrta.com/LRTA%20Bus%20Sched%2010410Final.pdf schedule here) which apparently stops running at 7pm. Basically I'll be leaving my house at 10, arriving at my destination at quarter of four, and leaving by 7 to do the whole trip home again. This costs roughly 35 for the day and is really stressing me out... I don't have access to a car, but any other options are really appreciated!!!

(PS: I'm doing this to visit a close friend who just got out of the hospital, so it's something that's really important to me, I just want to see if there's a way I can spend more time actually with her than traveling/stressing).
21st-Dec-2009 01:32 pm - Books for sale
To help relieve my seemingly perpetual state of poverty, I'm selling a selection of books from my collection. Most of them have been sitting around my house for ages... It is time for them to go and I am selling them cheap.

If you like to read, please have a look! I'm a student currently working an unpaid internship, so I really need some extra cash. You know the story.

Book list and details cut for courtesy. )

Plenty of books left. Check it out. :)
21st-Dec-2009 09:26 am - Not Boston-centric, but included.
Can somebody clue me in about some weird Massachusetts stop lights?

We saw one that was a green light... with a flashing red on top. WTF is that?

I've heard of something similar, like a yellow light with a flashing red on top.

Any idea?
20th-Dec-2009 01:37 am - Where's our Snowmaggedon of Love?!
Aw, I'm kinda jealous of DC... if this is how they react to having >12" of snow, I almost wish we got it less often up here! Where's the friendly snow spirit, Boston? Except for the psycho cop who started waving his gun. They can keep that dick, we got enough of those.
19th-Dec-2009 07:34 pm - OMG WTF FRENCH TOAST ORANGE
THIS IS FOR COWBOY GENE.

BOMBS, PEOPLE. THE GOV'MENT IS TALKING ABOUT THE STORM BOMBING ACK. I DO NOT KNOW WHERE OR WHAT ACK IS, BUT I FEEL SORRY FOR THEM.

SNOW RAMPS UP THIS EVENING...WITH THE WORST OF THIS STORM LIKELY
OCCURRING IN A 6-8 HOUR WINDOW OVERNIGHT AND EARLY SUN AS STORM
BOMBS OUT SOUTH OF ACK. HOWEVER...WE MAY HAVE SOME BL ISSUES FROM
ACK-CQX WHERE THERE MAY BE SOME RAIN/SNOW MIX FOR A TIME THIS
EVENING. WET BULB TEMPS AND SOUNDINGS SHOW POTENTIAL FOR RA/SNOW
MIX THROUGH 06Z BUT ONCE STRONG OMEGA MOVES IN EXPECT ANY MIXED
PRECIP TO BECOME ALL SNOW AFTER MIDNIGHT. THIS MAY CUT DOWN ON SNOW
ACCUM IN THIS REGION.

ALSO:

High: Heavy snow predicted. Harvey Leonard breaks into huge grin, can't keep his hands off the weather map. Proceed at speed limit before snow starts to nearest supermarket to pick up two gallons of milk, a couple dozen eggs and two loaves of bread - per person in household.

GO NOW.
19th-Dec-2009 07:30 pm - Local area audio specialist?
My dad recently came into posession of some old 78s of my grandfather singing. He'd like to have them transferred to a digital medium for posterity (and to make it easier for grandma to listen to).

He's tried doing it himself, without too much success. Does anyone know of any sort of resource that would be able to get the audio off of the old records, and clean it up so it's comprehensible?

Thanks, guys!
19th-Dec-2009 05:09 pm - Boston food gift basket
Howdy, [info]b0st0n braintrust!

If you were putting together a little gifty basket of Boston (or MA in general, I suppose) foodstuffs, what are some things you'd include?
19th-Dec-2009 02:45 pm - Sleep No More
Hopefully this post isn't annoying or spammy, but I just noticed that some tickets for Sleep No More at the ART (www.amrep.org) have opened up tonight. It's really popular and is sold out for the next few weeks, so I thought if anyone is interested in going tonight, I'd give them a heads up. I've already seen it and it's fantastic. Highly recommended!
Be sure and check the French Toast Alert Scale: http://www.universalhub.com/french-toast
